7 signs a network marketing company is one to build with for life

The checklist I use to decide where to plant my flag — before I look at a single number in the compensation plan.

Choosing the wrong company doesn’t cost you a season: it costs you the years you spend rebuilding what fell apart. This is the checklist I wish I’d had before jumping from one project to the next.

If you lead in network marketing, you already know how to sell, how to recruit and how to motivate. The problem is almost never your talent: it’s where you put it. A fragile company turns a great leader into someone who starts from zero every two years. A solid company turns the same effort into something that compounds.

After more than a decade in direct sales and almost ten years with a single company, these are the 7 signs I look at before the compensation plan. In this order.

01

Founders who show their faces

If you don’t know who runs the company and you never see them, that’s a bad sign. Good founders get on stage, recognize their people and answer questions. They’re not just a logo.

02

A product that stands on its own

Ask yourself: would anyone buy this even if the business opportunity didn’t exist? If the answer is no, it isn’t a product — it’s an excuse to recruit.

03

A duplicable system

Individual talent doesn’t scale; a system does. Look for structured training, live and recorded, that anyone on the team can follow without depending on you.

04

Proven longevity

Years, not months. A company that has been growing for a decade has already passed the tests that knock out the fads. Bet on what will still be here ten years from now.

05

Compliance and ethics

A serious company prohibits you from promising income and requires you to include legal disclaimers. That’s not red tape: it’s what protects you when you build for the long term.

06

Community and culture

People don’t stay for the plan; they stay for the people. A culture of real values holds your team together when the numbers get tight.

07

Rewards for building

Be wary of models that reward recruiting and disappearing. The healthy approach is earning by serving and retaining, not by inflating and running.

The sign that sums them all upWould you build here for ten years?

If I had to keep just one question, it would be this: would you be willing to build here for the next ten years? If the answer makes you uncomfortable, no commission will make up for that “no.” If the answer is yes, you’ve already made half the decision.

I asked myself that question in June 2016 with inCruises. It met all seven. That’s why I’m still here — and that’s why, if you’re at that crossroads, I prefer to have this conversation with honesty rather than haste.
